1687 Captain Thomas Crofts was a COMMANDER of his Majesty's Ketch the "DEPTFORD" man -o -war on the Virginia Station. He was found to be in disfavor of the Virginia Govenor due to a complaint made by the Merchant Ships commanders coming into port.Complaint said he was of a ruffian character and ofen time a number of English officers commanding ships out of Virginia frequently caused trouble to colonist and to merchant ships trading to Va. and was called almost as bad as a genuine Pirate by some.
Charges were made By Lord HowardApril 22 . Crofts was ordered to return to England and face the charges.Crofts refused .
Found in Vol. 2 of VA Historical Mag. Letters of William Fitzhugh.
A Major Arthur Allen was also mentioned in the same complaint along with Thomas Crofts.
You do not give a time frame with this inquiry, hope this information is of use to you.
Another note has a Thomas Croft commander of the ship ROSE CROWN from Barbados to London, but no dates to compare with.
