That's a very good question.Worth Ray's conclusion regarding Samuel being a son of joint
Robert Crockett -- son of Richard Crockett of Somerset County, MD -- is interesting but not
convincing for the following reasons: (1) Samuel and Joseph, Sr. leave a trail of
deed and business transactions from Lancaster County, PA, southward about as far as
Baltimore -- then come to southwest Virginia to what are now Wythe and Montgomery
Counties. As has been said before, Samuel's will names Joseph's son Joseph, Jr., to be
guardian of his surviving children.Samuel and Joseph are strongly linked by these
circumstances.
(2) Joseph's children and descendants echo the given names of Antoine and Louise's
family -- most importantly, the names Antoine/Anthony and Louis/(fem. Louise).
This is a strong indicator that this Joseph was that son Joseph of Antoine Crockett/deCroquetagne.
So Samuel is linked to Joseph, and Joseph is linked to Antoine. That's about the way it
sizes up.There is confirmation that Samuel spent some time around the north Chesapeake
region, for his father-in-law Rev. John Thompson has been documented as being in
Delaware and SE Pennsylvania about the time that Samuel was married. Then Rev. John
headed south as far as NC in his ministerial labors -- maybe Samuel and wife Esther sort
of followed him part way.
Regarding the Notable Families source, all I can say is that the research for it was
primarily done before the Irish civil war, while the parish and county records were yet
unburnt. The reference to a marriage of Anthoinne Crocquet and Anne Martin, that has
been mentioned in other posts, derives from a surviving INDEX of marriages -- the original
records having almost certainly been incinerated in the 1919 Dublin fire.I would venture that,
where the genealogical data is complete it is very probably correct and was the result of
research into documents that no longer survive today.Where the data is incomplete,
the pedigree may be the result of conjecture based on that incomplete data, and more
subject to question today.
It would be most interesting to hear Worth Ray's support for the "Richard connection",
if anyone should feel inclined to post it.
