Some years back I exchanged correspondence with Kathryn Jones author of Crockett Cousins about the John Crockett of NC, GA, and TN. In the 1980s she had tried to place John in the limited context of what was then known of the Carolina Crocketts. It was known, for instance, from an 1804 LW&T that Archibald Crockett of Mecklenburg Co, NC left to son John some land in Hawkins Co, TN, though whether or not John ever went out to collect it has never been learned. She emphasized in the notes (page 163 of Crockett Cousins) that this was speculation. When Archibald's grandson David Morrow CROCKETT married in 1816, one John CROCKETT, magistrate, performed the marriage; he was about 30 years of age at the time and may have been Archibald's son John. More importantly, John of NC, GA, and TN appears to have been the son of another John Crockett and somehow related to a Samuel Crockett. So the Archibald theory really seems obsolete at this point.
Here is a thought. One line that needs a lot of work is that of Samuel Crockett of Surry Co, NC; he lived in what became Yadkin Co. The "Samuel Crochett" on the 1790 census of Surry Co, NC, was actuallySamuel Crockett. He is mentioned in land deeds and court records. He was there by 1779 and as late as 1795 when he old his land, but is not found on the 1800 census. He may be the same on a marriage bond in 1799 for Jacob Estep and Ruth Crockit. There is a LW&T from 1785 where John Thompson mentions daughter Ruth Crockett and minor John Crockett. At present little has been learned about this line.

I'll post more about john born 1780 as a response under the other query.More Replies:
