First, concerning the parents of David Crockett 1727 - 1777, research of records the past several years in Pennsylvania, Virginia and other areas of early America has not found any actual records that identify his parents.
The placing of him within the family of Joseph Louis Crockett or the de Crocketagne family group is only supposition and that supposition always leads back to information in one source ,the Maury Letter written in 1858 by D. T. Maury to S. M. Duncan. No actual legal records have been found that connect him to those families. Nor will there be for thefollowing reason.
DNA testing of proved descendants of David Crockett have established his Y-DNA values. See
https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Crockett/ for the Crockett Families DNA Project at Family Tree DNA. Crockett family Group 02 is a list of David's descendants.
DNA testing of descendents of Joseph Louis Crockett (wife Jean Devigne), Samuel Crockett (wife Esther Thompson), William Crockett (wife Agnes Ritchie) and Robert Crockett of the Calf Pasture River in Virginia have established their Y-DNA values and the fact that these four Crockett family lines are indeed related. Their descendants who tested are listed in Crockett family group 05. Exactly how they are related has not been determined. Actual legal records for these people have been found in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and elsewhere as their families spread across country.
The DNA values of the two groups do not match, absolutely proving they are not related. In fact to date, six completely unrelated Crockett family lines or groups have been identified. And another possible seven unrelated lines identified but need more tested members to expand their groups.
Second, concerning Joseph Louis Crockett 1676 - 1748, Sarah Stuart/Stewart, William D. Crockett 1709 - 1770, and Eliza Boulay. No records for these people have been found in either America or Ireland. Also no records in France and Ireland for the de Crocketagne. The source for these names always goes back to the Maury letter. Additionly, no Crockett records have been found in New York or in Hugonaut records in this county. And when living in areas having Hugonaut families, the Crockett's always seemed to be living with and intermarrying with Scotch and Irish.
Actual records found for people named by Maury for whom records can be found do not relate or connect them as he delineated them. Most whom he named can not be found in records at all. No Joseph Crockett, Sr. with wife Sarah Stuart. No William Crockett with a wife ___ Boulay. Or a John Crockett with a wife ___ Boulay as some claim. No James Edwin Crockett, no Jason Spotswood Crockett,no Walter with a wife ___ Ritchie.
Within the past thirty years too much has been disproved about the claims of the Maury letter to consider it a good source. And it would be only a secondary or hear say source anyway.
Unfortunately, French and Armstrong in their book, Notable Southern Families - Vol. V, did rely on the Maury letter for the older Crockett generations. Now found records or lack of any records at all are proving they made many mistakes in trying to connect all or most Crockett's in the US to one large Crockett family.French and Armstrong did very well where they found actual records and on current Crockett's of the time of their writing but made many mistakes on the oldest generations.
Anyway, to sum up, we do not as yet know who are the parents of David Crockett born about 1727.And do not rely on information from French and Armstrong or the Maury letter as being fact.
