Davy Crockett and His First Attempt at Marriage

This story has been published before about David Crockett marrying Margaret Elder. I believe there is some confusion here. David Crockett did marry Margaret Elder. Many people do not realize, but Davy's uncles, Robert, Joseph, Alexander, and probably William also named sons David. One of these Davids did marry Margaret Elder, daughter of David Elder and Margaret Gordon. He was most likely a son of Davy's uncle William. David and Margaret married in Jefferson Co. and then moved to Rutherford Co., Tennessee with her parents. David and Margaret then moved to Gibson Co. Goodspeed refered to him as Rutherford David Crockett. He lived within 12 miles of Davy in Gibson Co. Also David Crockett, son Davy's uncle Robert, lived in Gibson county within 12 miles of Davy. The Elder family was close to the Crocketts and moved with them for Frederick Co., Virginia to Tyrone Co., NC. and then to Tennessee. David Elder is proven to have been in Jefferson Co., because he witnessed a deed there. David Elder and his son in law show up together in the Rutherford Co., records.

The story of Davy being jilted by Margaret was probably invented to explain the marriage license since people did not realize that there were more than one David Crockett. The children of David and Margaret are in Crockett Cousins.
I believe he was a son of Davy's uncle William, who bought land on Dumpling Creek in Jefferson Co., about six miles from where John Crockett raised Davy. William is also thought to be the son of John Crockett, who later moved to McMinn Co. Two of John Crockett's (of McMinn Co.)descendents are in the Crockett DNA Project and are proven to be related to Davy's descendents.
Here is the published story by Preston and Armstrong.
DAVY CROCKETT AND THE CROCKETT FAMILY
BY JANIE PRESTON COLLUP FRENCH AND ZELLA ARMSTRONG
"Davy's first love affair was wth a neice of the Quaker. She came from North Carolina to make a visit.Hesoon learned that she was engaged to the Quaker's son.His next experience was deeper, more bitter, with a a rather tragic ending. He fell in love this time with the fair Margaret Elder, who gave her consent to marriage. With a light heart, Davy set off to secure her license.
The marrriage bond is on file in the Court Hourse at Dandridge, Tennessee, today. When he returned, he was met at the door by Margaret's younger sister. With tears in her eyes, she told him that Margaret had been untrue to him, had deceived him, and was engaged to marry another man the next day. This almost broke the heart of the stalwart young man, who believed so much in the justice of things. Nature is kind to youth! In about another year, Davy met and married the pretty Polly Finley."
David Crockett married Margaret Elder, David Elder's daughter, on February 16, 1804 in Jefferson Co., Tennessee.
