Hello Diana,
I haven't logged on to this site for awhile and just couldn't believe it when I read your message. My wife is Pamela Dawn Hood and she has some of the same relatives that you do.We live in Australia but her father's family came from NZ and prior to that, the areas of Donegal and Tyrone that you refer to.
My mother-in-law who is still alive recalls the McInyre name being mentioned by her father-in-law.Before I confuse you too much, I'll briefly note the connections.
Andrew Hood married Catherine Johnson on 27th December, 1882 at Pleasant Point, near Timaru, South Island.Andrew's parents were William Hood and Mary Gamble.Catherine's parents were William Johnston and Catherine Gamble.Andrew Hood was from a large family who lived at Edenmore, near Clonleigh, Donegal.Pamela visited there in 2002 and we are going again in 2004.We know quite a bit about the Hood's and Gamble's and have met living relatives there as well.
Andrew had several brothers in NZ as well but only one (Robert) had children.Andrew had a number of children as well but only one had children as one was killed in WWI, one died shortly after his return in 1918 and the two surving daughters had no children. The one with children was named William and that is my Pamela's grandfather. He migrated to Australia in 1909, married and often returned to visit his sister and father in NZ.
Cahterine Johnson Hood died in 1914 and we have really been unable to find much about her ancestors and often wondered if any others from her family may have come to NZ too.Your Mary almost sounds like a close relative to our Catherine. When Mary (Gamble) Hood died at Edenmore in 1900, her two brothers were listed in the will (which we have a copy).Their names were William Gamble of Bridge Hill and James Gamble of Castlederg. Also a signature found on the will was John Crockett.
We have done quite a bit of research into the Crockett family as there are many connections with the Hood's Crocketts, and Gambles in a number of generations. We are going to visit Dr James Crockett Hood's grave in Jersey whilst on our trip next month as well.
Sorry to write so much but we are really pleased to finally here from a McIntyre in NZ.Pamela can be written to at work on [email protected] and our home email is [email protected].
Must go,
William Hempel
