Crockett, Hood, Gamble Donegal Ireland
I am looking for more information regarding the Gambles, Crocketts and Hoods and others of Donegal Ireland area.
The source I am using right now "Irish Immigrants in the Land of Canaan Letters and Memoirs from Colonial and Revolutionary American, 1675-1815- Kerby A. Miller etal.” indicates that
George Crockett Sr. married a Catherine(?) Gamble abt 1766.George and Catherine were living in Drumnashear Killea Parish, Raphoe barony, Donegal, Ireland inabt. 1822, indicated by letters they received from their children.
Catherine Gamble Crockett probably died abt. 1807.
Their children, George Crockett married Mary Ann Fulton emigrated to USA in 1796 ,Maryland to Tennessee, James Crockett married Hanna (McCarten? religion Catholic) emigrated USA 1796, NY to PA ***John Crockett took over Edenmore “a small farm at Edenmore, Co Tyrone on the East side of the Foyle, whence some of his own sons later emigrated”****, Samuel Crockett, William Crockett emigrated USA 1806, NY >MD>Tennesee,David emigrated 1805>NY>Tenesee>Ohio, Robert emigrated to Tennessee but died in Drumnashear, Elizabeth emigrated to Maryland died 1818, Alexander married Sarah Gamble and Catherine married James Gamble (a cousin?)
The Gamble family is mentioned in that prior to the American Revolution members of the Drumnashear Crockett family and their Gamble, Fulton, and Donaghy relations emigrated to the colonies. It also mentions a intergenerational link to Moses Johnston, John Dunlap and Margaret Wright. Also mentioned is James Gamble and James Wark(Work) east Donegal emigrants to Crawford Co., PA
I have not connected George Crockett, Sr. to a particular Crockett family yet.
It does mention George Crockett Sr. having siblings, unknown sister married David Fulton, William, Robert, Alexander and unknown sister married John Culbert.
***A Rev. John Crockett married a Rebecca Sproul and his children: John married Margaret Sproul, Fanny married John Gamble, Rebecca married James Gamble , Thomas married Maggie Porter, Catherine married John McCay, Andrew married Rebecca Love. I have not been able to confirm that this John Crockett is the son of George Crockett Sr. and Catherine Gamble but have included it because of the reference to the Gambles.
I am taking into consideration that the information in the book may be incorrect but it certainly seems to be pointing in the correct direction.
I would be interested in any information you may be willing to share on the Gambles and Hoods in hopes that it will lead me to my Crocketts.
An excerpt from Crockett Cousins indicates that my ancestor James Crockett is connected to the families above. I have not figured out how yet. Written by William Day Crockett, Sept. 9th , 1926
“In 1790, three brothers of the name of Crockett brought the three hundred acre farm known as EDENMORE a mile or two from Lifford, in North Ireland. The three bothers were named: William, George and James, who their Father was I do not know; but according to the law of probabilities, his name may have been John.
The Three brothers were married, and all the families lived in the Farmhouse of Stone- a long, low, rambling structure which was still standing when I visited the place in 1907, nineteen years ago this summer. I there found cousins of the name of Hood living on the place, though the farm had at that time shrunk from 300 to 100 acres. I cannot recall whether the Hoods are descended from the William or the George Crockett above named. At the time of my visit there was a fourth cousin of ours living, a Mr. John Gamble, who was then about 90 years of age, and a walking encyclopedia as to members of the family. With his help I was able to trace the families of William and George Crockett, which have long been scatted to the four quarters of the earth, as they have descendants in Canada, on in far west Australia, in New Zealand, and in South Africa as well as in England and North Ireland.
James Crockett had 16 children by his first wife who lie buried in North Ireland. and seven by his second wife, one Elizabeth McClure(incorrect, I have Elizabeth Gailbraith as his 2nd wife), who died in Sterling and is buried in Sterling Cemetery, James, himself, died in Baltimore, MD.,. Prior to coming of James to America in 1806, a number of his children had preceded him.”
Thank you
