Yes, my husband's great great great grandfather Rev. George Rice served the Cumberland Presbyterian Church through the Salt River Presbytery. The "Ministers of Mt. Olivet Church" say this about him:
"In 1836 George Rice assisted in leading a group of people in worship under a brush arbor on Cuivre River. This group of people became the charter members of Cuivre Church in 1847.George Rice was trained to "ride and preach," serving God, under the training of an older minister who was licensed and ordained. He is one of the seven "sons" sent out into the ministry from Mt. Olivet.George Rice was ordained September 26, 1848.Rev. Rice served the following churches: Mt. Olivet, Brush Creek, Buffalo, Clarksville, Concord, Frankford, Madisonville, Mt. Air, Prosperity, Macedonia, and Antioch.During the Civil War period Rev. Rice was one of the few Presbyterian ministers who received the commission to preach freely and regularly. He was Moderator of Presbytery six times. He died in 1888(actually he died Oct. 4, 1887) and is buried in the Mt. Olivet cemetery."
From 1864 until 1886, Rev. George preached in CO, KS, and TX.He returned to Salt River Presbytery then and was reinstated dying a year or so later.
I was wondering if Wm. W Crockett could have been the older minister mentioned above who trained George, since as I posted earlier the "Ministers of Mt. Olivet Church" says Rev. Crockett was the first man ordained by Salt River Presbytery in 1838.It's a long shot, but I wondered if you have anything that mentions Rev. Crockett working with Rev. Rice or simply knowing of him.
Thanks.
Anne Rice
PS:
My husband and his parents were members of the Buffalo Presbyterian Church in Louisiana, Pike Co., MO.
His father's parents were members of Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church, south of Vandalia, Audrain Co., MO.
His father's grandparents upon marriage were not with the denomination; they were with the New Providence Methodist Church, Montgomery Co., MO.
His father's greatgrandparents, Rev. George's son and wife, were members of Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church, Audrain Co., MO.
