It is not my intention to offend you, but there is really no delicate way to word this message. And while I hesitate to open this can of worms, the information you have provided to the board contains so many inaccuracies that I feel it necessary to reply lest this information perpetuate itself. Carey Crocker was born 1805 in Isle of Wight Co., VA (not Wright Co., VA or NC), married Rebecca Benton abt. 1826, and died 1861 in Barbour Co., AL. Carey Crocker was not the son of Jacob Crocker, Jr., but was the son of Drury Crocker and Lucy Barlow. Carey is mentioned as a son in the will of his father, Drury Crocker, which was dated 9 Jul 1825 and proved 6 May 1826 in Dallas Co., AL. Drury Crocker was born abt. 1770 in Isle of Wight Co., VA married Lucy Barlow 12 Feb 1793 and died 1825-26 in Dallas Co., AL. Drury Crocker was the son of Anthony Crocker and an unknown wife, and is mentioned as a son in the will of his father, Anthony Crocker, which was dated 29 Nov 1795 and proved 5 Sep 1796 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. This Anthony Crocker was born abt. 1732, presumably in Isle of Wight Co., VA and died there in 1795-96. This is as far back as this particular line can be reliably traced. There are many who contend that this Anthony Crocker was the son of William Crocker (d. 1737) and wife Katherine (d. abt. 1750), of Isle of Wight Co., VA, but it is virtually certain that he was not. It is much more likely that this Anthony Crocker was the grandson of William and Katherine Crocker, however, it is yet to be determined which, if any, of William and Katherine’s sons was his father. Jacob Crocker, Jr. is from a separate line. He was born abt. 1772 probably in Bute Co., NC (present Franklin Co.), married Patience (maiden name unknown) abt. 1793, and died 1833 in Lowndes Co., MS. Jacob, Jr. was the son of Jacob Crocker, Sr. and is named as such in various documents. Jacob Crocker, Sr. was born abt. 1732 probably in Brunswick Co., VA (not Granville Co., NC), married Mary (maiden name unknown) abt. 1768, and died Nov-Dec 1791 in Franklin Co., NC. Jacob Crocker, Sr. was the son of Anthony Crocker and his unknown wife and is named as a son in the will of Anthony Crocker written 28 Jul 1754 and proved 3 Sep 1754 in Granville Co., NC. This Anthony Crocker was born abt. 1705, presumably in Virginia and died Jul-Sep 1754 in Granville Co., NC. Many sources list Anthony’s wife as Dorcas (maiden name unknown), but there does not appear to be any evidence to substantiate this. Many sources also contend that it was this Anthony Crocker that was the son of William Crocker (d. 1737) and wife Katherine (d. abt. 1750), of Isle of Wight Co., VA, but there is solid evidence that he was not. At present it is not known who the father of this Anthony Crocker was. This is as far back as this particular line can be reliably traced. William Crocker’s will dated 24 Dec 1735 and proved 23 May 1737 in Isle of Wight Co., VA, names sons Anthony, Peter, Arthur, William and daughter Eliza. So at this point there are two lines of Crocker’s that both claim their Anthony Crocker was the son of William and Katherine Crocker. However, as previously stated, the Anthony Crocker who died 1754 in Granville Co., NC is definitely not a son of William and Katherine, and it is all but certain that the Anthony Crocker who died 1795-96 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia is also not a son of William and Katherine, but could well be a grandson. Anthony Crocker, the true son of William and Katherine Crocker likely had a wife named Mary, appears frequently in the records of Isle of Wight Co., VA, and could have been living there as late as 1775. You mention that William Crocker’s father was Anthony Crocker, Jr. First of all there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that the so-called Anthony Crocker, Jr. had any children. Nor is there any evidence that Anthony Crocker, Jr. was the son of Anthony Crocker, Sr. although bearing the same name could lead one to make such an assumption. It is not known when or where Anthony Crocker, Jr. was born. Any dates and places are simply guesses. All that is really known about Anthony Crocker, Jr. is that he married Ann Francis and that she presented the inventory of his estate to the Isle of Wight County Court on 9 Apr 1696. It is much more likely that William Crocker was the son of Anthony Crocker, Sr. who mentions a son William in his will. It is not known when or where the so-called Anthony Crocker, Sr. was born. Although it has been speculated that he was born in Devonshire, England there is no evidence to support this. All that is really known about Anthony Crocker, Sr. is that he was in Isle of Wight Co., VA by 1688 when he was one of the appraisers of the estate of Thomas Doles. His nuncupative (verbal) deathbed will was dictated sometime in May 1693 (not 1696) and was proved 9 Aug 1693 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. At the time of his will his wife was named Mary and she appears to have been his second wife. Many sources state that she was Mary Wombwell, however, there again appears to be no evidence to support this contention. What little evidence is available would indicate that she was not a Wombwell. The claim of Native American blood is a familiar story that can be found in many families and is almost always without foundation. Having researched the Crocker’s emanating from Isle of Wight Co., VA for a number of years, I have yet to find even a hint of Native American blood, however such stories still persist. Perhaps the heritage is there and I have missed it. The Trail of Tears took place in 1838-39 and primarily involved the Cherokee tribe. So unless your 3great grandfather William W. Crocker, and your 2great grandfather Carey Crocker took part in this migration and ended up in Oklahoma (and I know they didn’t), I would doubt that you had any ancestors on the Trail of Tears.
