Hello!

France played quite an important role in Croatian history and there were quite a few French people living in Croatian Dalmatia in the 19th century, so I would not be surprised this was true.
But you can research this Vital books on your own from USA. They are available through all Family history Centre's (LDS church) in the world. They range from 1817-1920. All details about Centre's and Vital books can be found on www.familysearch.org.

Good luck!
L.S.
