Crittenden Family Genealogy Forum

JJ Crittenden is in my family history. My grandmother was a member of the Missouri Crittendens, JJ's brother Henry also of Maj. John Crittenden. Henry 's son Thomas T. had a son Thomas T. Jr. who had my grandmother Mason Allen Crittenden. What you say is true. JJ is related to the Guilford Crittenden, 7 generations back, (Abraham Cruttenden) through the Guilford Cruttenden's brother Richard. One brother went to CT, the other to VA. Abraham had originally tried to come across from Holland in 1620 with the sister ship of the Mayflower, the Speedwell. Unfortunately, the Speedwell sprung a leak and had to turn back. Finally, in 1635, Abraham Cruttenden reached North America and was one of the original settlers of Guilford. There is an order of Nuns that keep records of the covenant signed by Cruttenden aboard ship before dropping anchor in the new land. If you call them, they will send a copy of the original document or a nicely rewritten colligraphy version. My grandmother died in 1996, at the age of 96. I guess, longevity was in the Crittenden blood like JJ. Still in his 70's, in the Senate, he initated the Crittenden Comprimise of 1860 to try and stop the Civil War. Alas, the emotions of the times prevailed. The bill did not pass. A biography was written in 1958 or 1959 if you are interested. My father has a copy of the liniage researched by an Uncle in the 1930, called "The Kentucky Crittendens". It documents much of the family history through to my father. If you have speific questions I can contact him and have him look up an answer. Good Luck!
