He did not use the stream to trans-port his lumber; instead he hauled it 75 miles to Dansville, N. Y., and sold it for $7.00 a thousand. The round trip took four days. This property was later divided between his two sons, Thomas and Noah Crittenden. These brothers in 1845 built the first sawmill in Oswayo and manufactured pine lumber which they hauled 75 miles to Dansville, N.Y., the nearest market, and sold for $7.00 per thousand feet. I found your "Ancestors and Cousins - from "Mayflower" to 2006" in the Ancestry World Tree Project. I am working on Lucinda Starkweather who married a Noah Crittenden. You have the two linked, but I fear that you have connected Lucinda with the incorrect Noah Crittenden. I will share some of the information I have acquired so far. Noah Crittenden and Lucinda Starkweather were married in January 1828. 10,000 Vital Records of Western New York 1809-1850 by Fred Q. Bowman gives the date as 16 Jan 1828 in Seneca. Noah Crittenden, Lucinda's husband, died on 9 Aug 1841 when the steamer Erie burned off of Silver Creek, New York. Carlton Lee Starkweather, M. D. wrote "When the steamer Erie was burnt he was on board, having sold his land at Oak Corners, N. Y. (now the town of Phelps) and was returning to Battle Creek, Mich., with a large sum of money; that was the last heard of him." Please refer to page 214 in his book, A Brief Genealogical History of Robert Starkweather of Roxbury and Ipswich. Another source is Once Upon a Time by Marion Thomas. On pages 127-128 she writes that a grandson, a druggist from Chicago, placed a stone marking Noah P. Crittenden's grave in the row of unmarked graves from the steamer Erie tragedy. Lucinda Crittenden was enumerated in the 1850 US census in Cristiana, Dane, Wisconsin. Her children were living with her - H. A. (Harriet A.), Mortimer, H. M. (Helen M.), Wm. and Caroline Crittenden. Lucinda Crittenden was enumerated in the 1860 US census in Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan in Dr. William M. Campbell's household. Helen Crittenden was living with her. Helen later married Dr. Campbell after his first wife, Lucia Starkweather (Lucinda's sister), passed away. Lucinda (Starkweather) Crittenden married Nelson Ford on 23 Nov 1862. This information was found on the Michigan GenWeb site for Calhoun County. Lucinda and Nelson Ford were enumerated in the 1870 US census in Keokuk, Lee, Iowa. Your information gives Noah Crittenden's death date as 8 Oct 1848 in Potter County, Pennsylvania. This is why I believe your Noah Crittenden is not the Noah Crittenden who married Lucinda Starkweather. I have not been able to trace my Noah Crittenden in the census records, yet, since I am not sure of his birth date or place. I will continue to look, though, and hope we can clear up the confusion. Sept 11, 1720 I am sure this is the real father of Osee.* His birth is listed on the same page of the Barbour Records in Durham, and the dates fit a lot better than the Samuel b. 1712. However, the Crittenden Genealogy states otherwise. It lists his father as Samuel b. 1712, son of Samuel and Mindwell Meigs. I am not sure of the identity of Sarah Mason, his alleged wife. Several websites have her listed as such but I have seen her named nowhere in the actual records. *This has been confirmed by a copy of a letter written in 1932 by one Rebecca Crittenden of Detroit Michigan, a direct descendant of Samuel through his son John. She confirms that there is an error in the genealogy and that the Samuel b. 1734 is the correct Samuel that is the father of this group of sons. Specifically she cites the NEHGR Vol. 5, p. 466-468 [Oct. 1898] In the letter she states that this Samuel [b. 1733/34] "moved to Conway c. 1772 with his wife and 7 small sons. Then later at least five of them married and moved to New York State, where he died at the home of his youngest son." Further she states that " John Jr. married in this state in 1831. My father at 73 still lives in the old homeseat near Mt. Clemens in which he was born and which his grandfather built from bricks made on the old farm. " Samuel had a son named Noah baptized in Durham, CT. in Aug. of 1768. Three years later, in Nov 1771, he had another Noah baptized in Conway, MA. About that same time, wife Sarah vaished from the records. He was also in Ontario Co. N.Y. near Seneca and is buried there. The whereabouts of the other Samuel is not certain, but it is believed that both Samuels spent time back and forth between Conway and Durham. Because of the proximity of him to this entire family I beieve that the Crittenden genealogy is wrong and he is the father of Osee and his brothers. It is easy to see why two Samuels with wives named Sarah would be mixed up. Here's another thought. There are descendants who insist that Samuel's wife was Sarah Joslin. That is only possible if she was his second wife and not the other of these first 8 children. According to the Guilford, CT Barbour records, Sarah Joslin, d/o Joseph and Sarah Joslin, was b. Nov 10, 1757 in Guilford. She m. Samuel Cruttenden (but which one?) June 24, 1778 also in Guilford. She died March 29, 1796 'in her 39th yr.' (Guilford VR) If indeed she did marry this Samuel as his second wife, they also had children together. Recorded in the VR are: Samuel, son of Samuel and Sarah, Dec 18, 1778; Sarah, Nov 3, 1786; Polly, July 23, 1789; there may be others, perhaps b. in Conway, MA. Or, the Samuel who m. Sarah Joslin may be another Samuel altogether. There were several: one, son of Joseph and Lucy Spencer, b. Nov 22, 1755 in Guilford, and another, son of Nathaniel and Mary Parmelee, b. Jan 2, 1747/48 in Guilford. Would he have named a second son Samuel? His firstborn with the Sarah above, b. 1755, was also named Samuel, and he lived until 1839, so it is not a case of naming a second son after a deceased son. Here is an excerpt borrowed from the web: Crittenden Cemetery Excerpt from The Country Cousin by Lucille M. Harford (1976), page 137, under Cemeteries in the Town of Geneva, New York: "At the corner of Pre-Emption and Castle Roads is the Whitney-Crittenden Cemetery, the only well-preserved family cemetery in the Town of Geneva. Captain Jonathan Whitney, a soldier in both the French and Indian War and the Revolution, first came to the Geneva area as an explorer in 1789. He remained four months and then returned to his home in Conway, Massachusetts. The following year he returned with his seven sons and their families and located on the north side of Castle Road where he died in 1792. He owned well over 1,200 acres of land, which was divided at his death among his family. His daughter Experience and her husband Immer Crittenden came to Geneva with Captain Whitney. In 1794 Immer s father, Samuel CRITTENDEN, followed with six sons and their families and settled in the area. Captain Whitney and Samuel CRITTENDEN, also a Revolutionary War soldier, are buried beside one another. Captain Whitney s grave is the oldest (1792) in the town. The majority of the approximately 29 graves in the plot are those of the family of Immer and Experience (Whitney) Crittenden. Most of the Whitney family members are buried in the Whitney Cemetery further west on Pre-Emption (County Road 4) in the Town of Seneca." 7 Change Date: 9 APR 2007 at 08:41:00 Father: Abraham V CRUTTENDEN b: 1 APR 1688 in Guilford,New Haven Co.,CT. Smyth Abraham Cruttenden was one of the first settlers of Guilford, CT., and was one of the twenty-five signers of the Plantation Covenant in 1639. It is said that he came from the county of Kent in England and had been a neighbor of William Chittenden, whose widow he afterwards married. He was probably married in England about 1622, and was probably about 28 or 29 years old at the time of the settlement of Guilford. He died in January, 1683, about 73 yrs. old. None of his children's births are recorded at that place, though some of them at least must have been born there. On April 30, 1676, he was appointed "overseer of the mill, bay dams, or floodgates." On June 6, 1651, he was chosen assessor and on June 9, 1653, townsman. In addition to his home lot he owned "a parcel of upland 20 acres abutting to the common woods," and "a parcel of marshland to the south 10 1/2 acres"; also a "parcel of upland over against the mill"containing 19 acres. The name is also spelled Crittenden. He married first Elizabeth, who d. 1664; second, widow Joanna Chittenden, 5-31-1665. She died August 16, 1668. His children were all by his first wife: 1. Mary 2. Abraham 3. Thomas 4. Elizabeth 5. Isaac 6. Hannah His will was dated 14 September 1681, proved 13 June 1683. Most sources list his wife's name as Mary, but the baptisms of his children in England list a wife Elizabeth for daughters Hannah and Elizabeth. [NEHGR 160: 231] Here is a copy of the Plantation Covenant he signed below: ["Guilford Covenant" signed 'on shipboard' June 1639] "We, whose names are hereunder written, intendending by God's gracious permission to plant ourselves in New England, and, if it may be, in the southerly part, about Quinnipiack: We do faithfully promise each to each, for ourselves and families, and those that belong to us; that we will, the Lord assisting us, sit down and join ourselves together in one intire plantation; and to be helpful each to the other in every common work, according to every man's ability and as need shall require; and we promise not to desert or leave each other or the plantation but with the consent of the rest, or the greater part of the company who have entered into this engagement. "As for our gathering together in a church way, and the choice of officers and members to be joined together in that way, we do refer ourselves until such time as it shall please God to settle us in our plantation. "In witness whereof we subscribe our hands, the first day of June 1639.
