Absalom Critchfield the Sr. left a will dated 2 April 1811 in Green Co. PA naming wife,Sarah, and a son John. Estate and will book 1, pgs 171-172 at Waynesburg, PA. The following I have abstracted from Rev War applications.

State of Pennsylvania
Somerset County

On this fourth day of December eighteen hundred and thirty Seven personally appeared before the Judges of the Court of Common pleas of Somerset County aforesaid now holding a Court of Common Pleas in and for Said County William Crihfield a resident of Milford Township in the County of Somerset and State of PennSylvania aged Seventy nine years when being first duly Sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress June 7th 1832. That he was drafted into the Service of The United States about the last of February Seventeen hundred and Seventy eight in the company of Captain Moses Hutton & Ensign Jonathan Hesh (?), on the waters of Vallersons (?) Creek in Hampshire County Virginia when he then resided that not being ready to start with his company when it marched he left home about four days after on the fifth day of March Seventeen hundred and Seventy eight and went through (cannot read the next 7 words) to Catfish’s Camp now Washington Pennsylvania and thence to Fort Henry now Wheeling Virginia where he joined his company and remained until the last of August or first of September 1778 when he received a verbal dischage from Captain Hutton having been out six months there was no general engagement in which declarant participated while he was out but he recollects that two members of Captain Hutton’s company named Jacob Crow and Jacob Neff were killed by the Indians at fort Henry.
Declarant further states that in September 1778 he hired as a substitute for Cornelius Hogland (who had been drafted) and that he marched from Hampshire County Virginia under the comman of Major Abanhieter (?) and Captian Johnston (christian name not recollected to Beeth (?) town thence across the Monongahela River at Devourt (?) ferry to Fort McIntosh now Beavertown PennSylvania and continued there for some time from which place Major Abanhieter (?) and Captain Johnston were sent home on account of the small number of troups. There the Company of Captain Johnston men became separated and the members being attached to different companies declarant was attached to the company of Captain Archibald Higgens from Fort ----? They marched through the wilderness to ------(?) where they built fort Lawrence he continued there until about the eleventh (?) day of December (?) 1778 when he was veribally dischanged by Captain Higgens having been out these (?) months and a half making the whole time of his service both terms included nine months & a half - from Hampshire County Virginia declarant removed to Somerset County Pennsylvania on the month of October 1781 where he has resided ever since. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and he declares that his claime is not on the pension roll of any agency on any State or if any only on that of the ageny in the state of Virginia.
Declarant further stated that the only reason why he did not sooner apply for a pension was his dislike to appear upon the pension roll, but that he is now old and unable to work and stands in need of such sum as Government may see fit to allow him for his services.

In answer to a question put by the court declarant further States that he was born in the State of New Jersey in the year 1758 that there were no Regular Officers at fort Henry and that he does not recollect the names of the Regular officers at fort McIntosh William Crihfield Sworn & Subscibed in open Court 4th Dec 1837. Both Joshua and Nathaniel testified for Wm Crihfield

Note:        Joshua Critchfield living in Fairfield County Ohio November 1837 testifies that he is a brother of the above Wm. Critchfield. Joshua’s Rev. War Record (S2476) states he was living in Fairfield County Ohio in 1832, he was born in Sussex Co., state of New Jersey 1753
       
       Nathaniel Critchfield living in Knox Co. Ohio in 1837 testifies that he is a cousin of the above Wm. Crihfield. Nathaniel Critchfield’s Rev War Record (S2473) states in Sept of 1832        he is        living in Knox Co., Ohio., he was born in Shippestown Pennsylvania in Nov 17(Paper torn) and Nathaniel had a brother John living Holmes County Ohio. John Critchfield’s Rev War Record (#42144) states he applied for a pension in 1821in Wayne County, Ohio, aged about 60 years, living with wife Rachel and their sons Enoch and Asa Critchfield. This John probably is        the brother of Nathaniel.. Nathaniel served as Subsitute for Benjamin Critchfield. William Critchfield of Knox County Ohio, Rev. War Record (S 16091) testified in June 1832 that he was born in where the town of Hancock now stands in the State of Maryland in 1763, he had a record of his age made by his father said record is at the residence of his brother John Critchfield in Holmes Co. In the state of Ohio.

Holmes County was formed 20 January 1824 and organized the next year. Holmes County is made up of parts of Wayne Coshocton and Tuscarawas Counties. The county derived it name from Major Holmes, a gallant young officer of the war of 1812. The county seat is Millersburg.
