Hi Everyone,

It has been pretty quiet.. I know, end of school year, etc. Hope it means everyone had a great holiday weekend.

I just wanted to let you know, I've applied for a spot at rootsweb, so we can send to one address and everyone will get the post. Had to do it by snail mail, so will take a bit. Will let you know when I receive notice.

Joanne, I got a packet from Elizabeth Bailey. Has several group sheets on your crisp line that meets her Bailey/ Matthews, a couple of other interesting articles and a very good copy of a photo of Nancy Elizabeth Crisp and James M. Bailey. Let me know if you want copies.

Since we have some of Bray's descendents with us now, I have a couple of copies of info sent to the Cherokee Co. Heritage book. They were sent to me about 3 years ago when I was checking Crisp in Nc. Makes interesting reading. So am going to send it as parts. Maybe Bryan, Millie and David would llike to comment?

So here's Part 1.

Cherokee Co. NC Heritage book.
William Crisp- Early Settler

William Crisp was one of the early settlers of that part of Cherokee County that is now known as Graham County. He was born in Laurens Co. SC about 1794. Little is known about his early life. Some records show that he came to SC at
the age of 3 from England with his family. Some records show his father to be Bray Crisp. William also had sons named Merrel Bray, John Alford, and Mancel F. William married Alice Mily Barker (date unknown). She was from Wake CO. NC
and the daughter of William Barker who came to NC from VA. William and Mily had a large family-18 children, 9 sons and 9 daughters.
The first records of William and Mily begin in Buncombe Co. where he first purchased land at 5 cents per acre. Later in Jackson Co he owned 600 acres which he bought for 6 cents per acre. Moving further west it is found that he bought
land in Clay, Cherokee and Graham Counties. His largest holding is believed to have been in Graham Co. In Cherokee CO. he obtained land by trading chickens to the Indians. William Crisp was not looking for adventure when he moved to
Western NC. He was searching for economic improvement. With such a large family, survival was a problem.
William stayed in each county in which he lived for a long period of time. The records show that he had children born in each. before his death in 1870's he had left large tracts to each of his children. He did not leave them by will,
but by deed. By his descendents he was described as a smart man, a good man, and as a man, believed in earning your own keep. These traits lead me to believe that he sold his land to his children instead of giving it to them. He wanted them to
have it, but he wanted them to earn it. The writer of these lines is a great great great grand daughter of William Crisp and lives on land that he once owned as do many of his descendents in Stecoah, Tuskeegee, Mountain Creek and Yellow Creek communities of Graham Co.
William was nicknamed "Old Billy Crisp" because he had a son named after him. Nearly every one of his sons and daughters named children after him. He had the first white child born in Cherokee County. Hazy Avaline Crisp was born 7
August 1830 on what is now Yellow Creek. William and Mila first settled on their land on Yellow Creek. Later he bought land on Mountain Creek and, later still, he bought land in Stecoah. Mila died in the 1860's and William in the 1870's.
Both are buried in the Hazy Brown cemetery in Stecoah. Many stories are told about William Crisp. The most famous one is his mining venture on Sweetwater Road. He was given credit for bringing the first wood stove into this part of the country. It is rumored he had the first grist mill in the county. Simpson Alexander drowned in the millpond while working on it. There is
still a mystery as how he came to be in the pond. This mill was located on Yellow Creek.
