Hi Thomas - I am a descendent through Frederick's sister Ann Rebecca Crisp McIntosh.
In the 1851 census, Barbara is living with her parents Peter and Janet and her siblings William 17, Jane 16, Ann 14, and Peter 11. By 1861 only Peter and Barbara are living with the parents.
I have not been able to or spent much time connecting the Peter and Janet McIntosh family to the John and Margaret Ross McIntosh family. It was only through Anola's post that I became certain that Frederick was a brother. While I had suspected it for some time, I had no proof and his birth in Ireland was throwing me off a bit.
My grandfather Philip Ross McIntosh husband of Ann Rebecca, had brothers John and Alexander as well as siblings Donald, Hugh, Esther, Jane, Euphemia, James, Susan, Catherine, George, and Effy. Is this the McIntosh family you are wondering if Barbara is connected to?
As I said, I have spent little time trying to make a connection. However I would be happy to go through some of my notes and books to see if I can find any reference to the Peter McIntosh family. I think I have may have an obituary for a Peter who died out west.
From the obituary for their son Hugh and other documentation, John and Margaret came to Canada in about 1831 - just about the time Philip was born - and settled in Glengarry County near Martintown. They were still living there in 1838 when Hugh was born. John was involved in the 1837 rebellion and allied himself with William Lyon McKenzie. One of the histories of Grey County said that he and McKenzie were related and that the family had letters written between them. I have not been able to confirm this. About 1842 they moved into Grey County and settled in the area of what is now Dornoch. After some dispute - another early settler throught the town should be called Smithville - it was named Dornoch after the McIntosh's Scottish home.
I am only giving you this information just in case it is similar to anything you might already know about Barbara's family.
Certainly the Crisp, and both of the McIntosh families all lived in the immediate area. This is based on census records and the burials of Grandma Crisp and my McIntosh grandparents in Latona and as I just found out so are Barbara's family. But I can't say anything else with certainty.
Just as a note one of the cemetery transcriptions for Latona says Mary wife of Capt. G. Crisp died January 18, 1905, at age 59 years. Another transcription says died 1805.
The notes I have say, In memory of Mary, wife of Capt. G. Crisp died January 18, 1865 aged 59 years. I made these notes on my numerous visits to the cemetery and from the photograph I have of the tombstone.
I did some quick looking and Barbara's parents are buried in Latona, along with her brother Peter and his wife Elizabeth Byers. I also found marriage registrations for her siblings William and Jane.
Hope this helps. I live relatively close to Dornoch and my husband grew up less than a mile from the Latona Cemetery so we have spent many many hours exploring the area. If I can be of any other assistance please let me know.
As an aside does anyone know where Grandpa Crisp (the Captain) and Aunt Abigail are buried? I know they were living in Nassageweya when they died but I have not been able to find tombstones. I have been to Ebenezer where Uncle William and Aunt Emily Laing are buried but there is no stone in this cemetery. Does anyone know or have a guess?
Also I have a passion for photographs. Are there any family pictures out there particularly of the children of Shadrach and Mary Crisp? We have formal portraits of Ann Rebecca and Philip that were taken in the early 1900's. I would love to see pictures of their siblings if any still exist and/or pictures of their descendents. I would be more than willing to take care of any costs of duplicating the pictures.
Thanks and hope to hear from you soon.
Nancy
