My ggg grandfather James Herdman was refered to by the Ottoman Government as "Herdman-Bey" Superintendent Engineer of the Imperial Ottoman Navy. He gave 25 years service to the Ottoman Government and to the best of my knowledge was in charge of several hundred British Engineers working at the time converting the sailing ships into a fleet of steamships. He attained the rank of "Bey" and Knight of the Imperial Order of the Medjidie. Can anyone elaborate on the rank and also any information on the Imperial Order of the Medjidie would be appreciated.
