Missing in Action......?

Hi
My great grandmother brought to NZ the usual Family Bible. In it was a listing of members of her family including:
JAMES FAIRY born 30 NOVEMBER 1852 in Pailton Warwickshire.
There was an additional entry;
"Missing on secret service action India."
The family moved to Birmingham, Warwickshire after James's birth, but I am unable to find them on the 1861 census when James would have been 4. his father is living alone in the 1871 census in Birmingham.
Can some one help me please;
1. Would James have been able to go into the Army at age 14?
2. Any idea what regiments were formed in Birmingham 1861-1871?
3. If he was missing in action in India would there be a list anywhere? Would his parents have been notified? Would there be any Rolls of Honour or similar for any troops left behind in India missing or dead?
I'd be very grateful if anyone can give me any clues/leads which i can follow.
Thanks
Marlene
