34th Cumberland Regiment/wives
Posted by: Christine Hickton (ID *****1957) Date: December 25, 2002 at 15:23:14

My gg grandfather Henry Thomas Hickton was in the 34th Cumberland Reg and was killed during the assault on the Quarries 7th June 1855. This regiment does not appear to be mentioned in some of the stuff I have read about this battle on various sites. Were they only a "bit player" in the battle, or is it because not everyone gets a mention?
My gg grandmother was with him, but returned to England aboard the "Dunbar" where she gave birth to her daughter somewhere off Corfu. I cannot find out if that was before or after Henry's death. Does anyone have any ideas? Was the "Dunbar" a troop ship?
I would be most grateful for any help in finding out more about this part of my history and about what it was like for the women who went to war.
