James Jefferson McWilliams, Highland Rgmt, Battle of Sevastapol

My GGrandfather had a brother named James Jefferson McWilliams who was from Tyrone Co., Ulster, Ireland. Family history (unverified) says that he was in the Highland Regiment and died at the Battle of Sevastapol. How and where do I go to verify this story? Any help would be appreciated. I have done military records in the US but have no experience researching outside the US.
