Rosemary... Please go to this site "Who's Who in New York City." It lists a "WILLIAM ARMSTRONG, lawyer, as being the son of JOSEPH ARMSTRONG, one of the famous "six hundred at the Battle of Balaklava in the Crimean War. It doesn't say anything about a John Armstrong. Unless perhaps his name was John Joseph Armstrong? "http://books.google.com/books?id=o0sWAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA27&lpg=PA27&dq=John+Armstrong,+Crimean+War&source=bl&ots=f-kPmUmz3U&sig=KUSgV1HJsl_uHmksrdw1yl2gD-g&hl=en&ei=VB60TYnfNcubtwe1pbHpDg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CCgQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=John%20Armstrong%2C%20Crimean%20War&f=false
