I too am searching for a Crimean War ancestor and do not know the Regiment to begin with. Family history indicates that Patrick Finnegan went to a port in Cork County, Ireland hoping to find a better life. He joined the British Army and boarded a troop ship bound for the Crimea that had stopped for supplies.
During the war, he spent some time as a prisoner and after the war settled in New Brunswick, Canada. I have a single document stating that he and Col. Douglas Wetmore were training locals in defense of the province during Fenian Raids and his rank of Sargeant was used.
I summise that he served under Wetmore during the Crimean War as well. Without knowing his regiment, how could I locate him. I know little of military heirarchy but would knowing their ranks help to narrow the search at all?
