Dear Anthony:

1245 Pte Joseph Fox enlisted in the 17th Lancers on 27 May 1854; musters indicate he "confessed to belonging to the 2nd Lancaster Militia before a Regimental Board while stationed with the Depot troops in the 2nd quarter of 1854; he embarked from Brighton for the Crimea on 8 April 1855 and arrived on 29 April 1855; he was sent to Scutari on 25 July 1855 and returned to the Crimea on 19 November 1855; he was absent (without leave) on 10 December 1855; he was a prisoner in custody from 11 February 1856; he was tried by Regimental Court Martial on 15 February and sentenced to 42 days imprisonment, being released on 27 March 1856. He was awarded a Crimean Medal (page 502 of the regimental medal rolls) with a clasp for Sebastopol (page 513 of the same document).
