Dear George:

As time and space preclude a lengthy reply, and the breadth of your subject is so large, I recommend that
you buy a copy of "Mr. Kipling's Army" by Byron Farwell.
It is the best cross section of the subjects of your interest which I have found . . . very well written, and VERY interesting, with all sorts of unique insights into life in the Victorian Army. Written in 1981 with used copies available inexpensively online.
