Thanks for the information. I'm a little confused by the annotation, particularly that covering his service. However, there are a few things I have found out about Henry Cheshire since posting this so maybe that will shed some light on it all.
Henry married (using the name Frederick Henry Cheshire)Eliza Downey in Exeter in 1857. At the time of his marriage and on the 1861 census he is living in Portland, Dorset.He appears on the census in Exeter in 1871 through to 1901 and he died at 4 Newcombe Terrace, Heavitree, Exeter. The date on the the death certificate and on his grave stone is 16th February 1912. The death certificate gives age as 77, the gravestone 79. Most censuses give his place of birth as Hertford (or places within 10 miles of it) and Hertford was the address he gave at sign up. The only possible candidate I can find in that area on the 1851 census is a Henry Chesher but he is considerably younger than the 20 Henry Cheshire claimed to be when he signed up. I do however have reason to think it is the same person and I believe he lied about his age when he joined the army.
I do now have a copy of some of his service records including a doctor's description of the injury. Unfortunately, it is a poor copy of a very old document and the writing is almost impossible to read.
