Stephen Kennedy served with the regimental number 566 in the 17th Lancers, and enlisted in 1838 (Lummis and Wynn, p. 281). He served as batman to Cornet Taylor, the RidingMaster during the first quarter of 1854. (Muster Rolls). He is an acknowledged charger---as opposed to many who only claimed to have participated in the charge. He was sent to Scutari on December 13, 1854, and then to England on February 26, 1855.(Lummis and Wynn and Muster Rolls). He was awarded the Crimean Medal (A&I Medal Rolls, pp. 493 & 499), a clasp for the Battle of the Alma (same ref.), a clasp for the Battle of Balaclava (p. 499 A&I roll, and p. 521 Balaclava Rolls), a clasp for the Battle of Inkerman (493/499) and a Sebastopol Clasp (p. 514, Sebastopol Rolls). He was also awarded Long Service and Good Conduct medals as a private on January 30, 1857. His medals are believed to be in an American collection. He attended the First Balaclava Banquet on October 25, 1875 (see write up of the event in the Illustrated London News, October 30, 1875), and was a member of the Balaclava Commemoration Society in both 1877 and 1879. (Lummis and Wynn / Three Chose War by Geoffrey Moore, p. 43).

I hope this is of help and that you will keep me posted of any more you learn of him. I am working on a book about the Light Brigade and hope you don't mind if I include some of your research in the book, with appropriate notation as to source.
