Dear Jessica: If the Charles Steel you are looking for was in the veterinary corps, then he was probably Charles Steel, the veterinary surgeon of the 12th Lancers, but if so, I doubt that he served in the Crimea or had any medal or clasp entitlements . . . (becoming a veterinary surgeon with that regiment on August 10, 1857 . . . roughly two years after the war) it is quite possible someone has mixed facts from the bios of the two Charles Steels thinking it was referring to the same person. I am unaware of anyone serving in the veterinary corps who was promoted to Lt Col . . . as I don't think they were part of the general promotional system. The is no indication of age in the records at my disposal . . . I think I suggested this, but you might join the Yahoo Groups Crimean War Discussion group and ask some of your questions. There are many people more knowledgable on these matters than I there, and maybe someone can give you some help. Sorry to not be of more assistance Notify Administrator about this message?
