Some of you may be aware that Marcus Sparling assisted Roger Fenton in photographing the Crimean War. But did you also know that:

He constructed a field camera in 1850 while in the military.

He wrote a book about photography, Theory and Practice of the Photographic Art (1853 or 1856).

He was a member of the 4th Light Dragoons, calvary division, until 1853. He was a member of the band.

His regiment was decimated in the war.

He named his youngest son, Omar b. September, 1855, probably after Omar Pasha, a Crimean War hero.

He was born in Ireland of Irish and German descent (Irish Palatine).
