Criggers in Wythe, Smyth, Grayson Counties, VA
My great grandmother was Winifred Catherine Crigger (known as Winnie, b. about 1866), oldest daughter of Frances C. Crigger, b. 1841 and Hiram Crigger, B. 1812.She had 3 siblings: Susan, Sarah, and John J. (Jake). This info was found in the 1880 Wythe County census.I found Frances in the 1850 Smyth County census in the household of Sarah and George Crigger.Siblings were John 16, Elizabeth 15, James 13, Anne 11, Frances 10, Emeline 8, and Matilda 6.Hiram Crigger is buried in a field underneath a big tree in Blue Springs, Smyth, VA.His marker reads:Hiram Crigger;PVT.I MO. MTD. VOLS;FLORIDA WAR;November 1878.Frances is buried at Pine Ridge Cemetery in Wythe County.Jake married Jennie Smith and I believe there were no children.Winnie first married Mack Sutherland of Grayson County about 1887 and had one daughter Lula McTeer Sutherland (my grandmother), b. Sept. 4, 1888.Mack was killed shortly after my grandmother was born.Winnie returned w/infant daughter to live with her mother Frances until she remarried a Peake and moved to WV.My grandmother stayed and was raised by Frances Crigger.I would very much like to share information and photos.
