Some have suggested that the following bequest indicates that John Rowen was Hannah's father or brother.
May 1, 1662. John Rowen of Henrico Co. willed to Giles Carter a cow and the use for one year of a house and land on Rowen's Turkey Island estate. (Henrico County Deeds, p 229)
But no connection between John Rowen and Hannah can be inferred from this bequest, because John made the bequest to Giles about 8 years before Giles married Hannah. We are confident about the approximate year in which Giles married Hannah, because:
1) James Crews provided for the whole Carter family as it existed when he wrote his will--i.e., Giles, Hannah, Theodorick, Susannah, and Mary. James Crews did not mention Ann or Giles Jr because they were not yet born. This clearly indicates that Theodorick, Susannah, and Mary were born before July 23, 1676 (i.e., in about 1671, 1673, and 1675) and that both Ann and Giles Jr were born after July 23, 1676.
2) The above birth years are supported by the will of Giles Carter (written September 14, 1699), which states that Giles Jr was to enjoy his own labor at age 18--demonstrating that Giles Jr was born after September 14, 1681.
3) The above birth years also are supported by the years in which the children married, started witnessing official documents, died, etc.
All the evidence indicates that Giles Carter and Hannah married in about 1670--at least 8 years after John Rowen made the above bequest to Giles. There is no evidence (at least none that I have seen) which indicates any relationship between John Rowen and Hannah.
