Douglas, I descend from John Crews Sr. and John Crews Jr. in the Old Lunenburg Co., Va. Tithe Lists. John Sr. was in the first Tithe List in 1748, and Richard Sr. was in the list in 1749, so they were born before 1727. I think John was born c1720 because John Crews Jr. was born c1740-42, and married c1764 Sarah Redman, daughter of William Redman,a surveyor and early settler of Charlotte Co. In 1764 John JR. was in his own HH. I am from their eldest child, Redman Crews (1765-1834). I certainly would like to get these Crews families in this area of Virginia all unscrambled. I don't know all of John Sr. or John Jr.'s children. I do know that Redman had brothers, John III, and David. David moved to Halifax Co., then to Patrick Co., Va. where he died. John went to Georgia, married Elizabeth Harris, da of Walton and Rebecca Harris, and returned to Va. and died in Brunswick Co. John Crews Jr. and wife, Sarah Redman, and her sister, Mary (Redman)widow of Philip Malone who was killed in the Rev.War, moved to Fayette Co., Ky. before 1790 and in 1792 they filed a lawsuit through an attorney against their brother, Benjamin Redman, in Charlotte Co. John Crews Jr. was living in Cumberland Co., Ky in 1799 but was not in the 1800 census. Redman Crews fought with Lea's Va. Legion in SC during the Rev. War and signed up when he was age 17. He was injured and returned to Halifax Co. He married Sarah Morton and lived next to his brother, David, then Redman moved to Green Co.(now Cumberland Co.), Ky. before his son, David Morton Crews Sr. was born on 18 Dec 1789. John Crews Sr.(m.__?Crispe) is said to be buried in the Ellis Cemetery on Ellis Ck in Halifax Co.across the Roanoke River from Charlotte Co. This information came to me by a descendant of Josiah Crews of Campbell Co., Va., who was doing research on these families also. They are difficult because they all named children with the first given names so often and where they were living was formed into smaller counties from the original very large Lunenburg Co. which covered eleven present counties and the lower part of present Appomattox Co., all east of the Blue Ridge Mtns. Bedford Co.was the first county formed from Lunenburg Co.in 1754. Richard Crews Sr. was living in present Lunenburg Co. after Charlotte Co. was formed in 1764 from Cornwall Parish. Lunenburg's Parish was Cumberland Parish. Descendants of Richard Crews Sr. believe that he came directly from England or Wales to Lunenburg Co. That is possible. A Richard Crews of Southwark Parish, Sussex Co., England, sent a son, William Crews, to Burlington Co., NJ, on some land that Richard had purchased, and then William moved to Philadelphia where he purchased town lots and set up a potter's business and died there in 1699 leaving a Will. He may have had a brother who stayed in England and then his son came to Va. The Lunenburg Co. lands were formed from the western lands of Brunswick Co. and they were open for development in 1743 with 5 years free of taxes to the settlers. If you learn more of these families PLEASE LET ME KNOW. They are frustrating. The way these Crews families began intermarrying I do not believe that John Crews Sr. and Richard Crews Sr., the first settlers in the area, were brothers or even first cousins but still connected to the same ancestor some generations back in England. Richard Crews Sr. had a son, John Crews,Sadler, who lived in Lunenburg Co. I am not sure whether that means he was called, Sadler, or that was his occupation. There is a Sadler family. His descendants may know. Elaine
