Hi, Bill, "Surety" means the person gave bond that the couples were free to marry and did not have a wife or husband somewhere else. Cousins did marry but it was frowned upon and if they were Quakers they were disowned by the SOF(Society of Friends) who would not be responsible for any offspring. Third cousins were acceptable. It prevented genetic disorders and major health problems in the children. Once in a long line may not cause problems but it was dangerous to have more than one first cousin marriages in many generations. John Crews Sr. and Richard Crews Sr.'s descendants might marry by the fourth generation and they would be OK even though they had the same last name. Elaine
