Hello, Bill,
"Sunlight on the Southside" by Landon Bell, is published by Genealogical Publishing Co.,Baltimore, Md. It covers the first tithe list of 1748 through 1783, with some blank years because of the French-Indian Wars and the Revolution when so many men were out of the area on the battlegrounds. "Old Lunenburg Co." was formed from the western part of Brunswick Co. in 1742 and to get settlers into the area they were free from taxes until 1748. Old Lunenburg covered 11 present counties up to the Blue Ridge Mountains. As the area became populated counties were formed in an area of about 17 x 17 miles so the men could attend the monthly militia meetings without being away from home very long. Rivers and creeks also were boundry lines for the newly formed counties.
The census records do not include the wife and children's names until 1850, too late for our bunch. The first USA census was in 1790 and that and including 1840 only listed the Head of Household and gave the ages of the people in the HH. The marriage records and the Wills and Deeds, and some great lawsuits are the best way to learn about our ancestors. There was a Tax List in 1787 which was helpful for me because I knew that Redman Crews was back in Halifax Co., Va.and living next to David Crews, (who was probably his brother), after the Revolution. He fought in SC. I do not know all of John and Sarah (Redman)Crews'children.
I will dig out my Tithe Lists and get them to you. Maybe you can separate them and get them all in order. It was driving me crazy so I put them all away to rest my brain. I copied them out of the book, "Sunlight on the Southside".
There was a Josiah Crews who lived in Campbell Co.,Va. that was part of our bunch. I corresponded with his descendant years ago but she died. He married __ Jeter, da. of William Jeter who moved to Edgecomb Co.,SC and left a Will. Funny that I can remember that.
My line is:
John Crews m. Sarah Redman
Redman Crews m.(1) __ Morton. He was a blacksmith.
David Morton Crews m. Betsy Smith
David Morton Crews Jr. m. Susan Ann Winifred Brown.
Jeremiah Richard Crews m. Sarah Goldman
David Henry Crews m. Samantha Enlow
Ruth Elizabeth Crews m. Forrest Byrd Dykes
Evelyn "Elaine" Dykes m Harry E. Rowland Jr.
Jeremiah Richard Crews was the Sheriff of Crawford Co., Indiana, and died in 1935. I have some great pictures of my Crews bunch.
Elaine, Key Largo, Fla.
(born in Dodge City, KS)
