Hello, W.E.,
You and I are in the same Crews slot! What fun to find another Crews who belongs to my Clan. I can't unscramble John and Richard Crews' children in the Charlotte/Halifax Cos.,Va. I think John, born c1720/24, is a brother of Richard who was born c1728. They are both on the "Old Lunenburg Co." Tithe Lists. John in 1748 (the first list) so he would have to be 21 or over and Richard is on in 1749. They are listed next to each other. I remember John Crews, the Saddler.
My John Crews, born c1742 (son of John or Richard), married Sarah Redmond/Redman, da of William Redman of Charlotte Co. who died about 1792. John and Sarah, and her siblings, sued their brother, Benjamin, over their father's estate in 1792 and Benjamin had left Va.(Published in the Va. Gazette).
John and Sarah Crews' son, Redman Crews, born 1765, is my ancestor. He fought in SC in the Rev. and was injured and pensioned. He lived in Halifax Co. until 1788/1789, next to David Crews who died in 1834 in Patrick Co.,Va. Redman Crews went to Cumberland Co.,Ky before 12-18-1789 because his son, David Morton Crews was born there. The area was a hot bed of Cherokee warfare until 1794 so I am not sure that David was right about where he was born. The Family Bible only gives his birthdate but on the census he says, Kentucky. Ky was Rev.Land Grants for Va. soldiers of the Rev.
One of our guys, Richard or John, died in Halifax Co. and is buried in the Ellis Cem. on Ellis Ck. One of the Richard Crews, which one, I don't know, had a son, Andrew,, born 1766, who married Mary Morton, and they moved to Cumberland (now Monroe Co.,Ky) about 1816 and lived next door to my David M. Crews thru the 1820 and 1830 census.
The Crews families stick together like glue. They are nice people so I guess they like their own company, too. My mother's maiden name was Crews, the only child of David H. Crews and Samantha Enlow of Crawford Co.,Ind.
I checked out John Crews Jr.(d. 1762 in Chas City Co.,Va.), and wife, Agatha Ellison, but they did not have a son, Richard. I think our bunch came from Surry Co.,Va. and may be sons of Thomas Crews II,who inherited his father's 80 ac.homeplace and left his Will in 1728. He had all minor children. William (inherited the 80ac homeplace of his grandfather), Thomas, and John, and his wife was pregnant, that child might be Richard.
In 1658 Thomas Crews Sr. purchased 80 acres next to Richard Crews' land on Gray's Ck, in Southwark Parish, Surry Co., Va. This Richard is never mentioned again. He may be Thomas' brother and returned to England. I believe he is Richard Crews of Southwark Parish, Surry Co., ENGLAND, who purchased land for a son, William, in New Jersey, and sent William there, then William moved to Philadelphia, bought town lots, and opened a potter's business and left a Will.
I found that "Sunlight on the Southside" by Landon Bell, publ by GPC. is very helpful in getting the names of John and Richard's kids but I can't tell whether I am looking at Richard, son of John, or John, son of Richard, or Richard, son of Richard, etc.
The deeds must be the only way to go on this family group.
Elaine Rowland
