I see what you mean about the "dark cloud." But if the father, John, died before they went to St. Joseph Co, Ind, then that "dark cloud" happened before they moved there and the "first dark cloud" was the first bad thing that happened in their new home. I think it could be interpreted either way, so I'll leave it to you.
I would point out, though, that the first line says that Isaac came to St. Joseph Co. with his mother and doesn't mention his father.
Pg. 431 under #71 Ursula, says that John died in Warren Co, OH.
