Hi Charlie, Hope this is not too late for your report. Believe it or not my ancestor in the Virginia Colony in 1640 name was John Crews. He added an S to the front of his name after a revolt called Bacon's Rebellion took place near Jamestown Va. As far as I have been able to determine the name Crews, Cruse Cruise, Cruwys, Crewes, Crues, Crusse and several different spelling of Screws came from a town in Devonshire, England. A town called Cruwys Morchard. It is near Tiverton, Devonshire. It has been there almost a thousand years. The name is supposed to mean "Bold and Aggressive.
kind regards, Jim Screws
