Jos. Crenshaw Sr.& Jr., Lunenburg, VA 1757-1759
Abstracts taken from the Lunenburg Order Books 4 and 6 suggest that it was Joseph Crenshaw JR. who was the one killed in 1758 at Fort Duquesne in the French and Indian Wars, and that Joseph SR. died in 1757 (the year his will was written) in Lunenburg Co., VA: (Please note the dates.)
LOB 4 OCTOBER COURT 1757 P. 386 - "Gedian & Thos. Crenshaw granted probate will Jos. Crenshaw dec'd; Jos. Williams security
LOB 6 JUNE COURT 1759 P. 6 - "Atkinson & Newsum on attachment (in hands Thos. Crenshaw) agst estate Jos. Crenshaw Jr. (absconded); plaintiffs to recover of Thos. Crenshaw to satisfy debt."
Also: Joseph Sr. would have been about 60 years of age or more in 1757 and unlikely toto have enlisted (as an actual volunteer - perhaps not paid and without rank of any kind) and travelled to far off Pennsylvania to risk his life.
Actually I wonder if he would have actually even been accepted at such an advanced age, and having left his wife and children and his plantation on Butcher's Creek in Lunenburg? Isn't usually younger men, able-bodied, and without many attachments, who are more likely to tackle such things?
I welcome any comments.
Otis Fuller (descendant of Joseph Crenshaw Sr. through his daughter Priscilla who married Robert Duke)
