According to my records, the first Crenshaw in America was David Crenshaw, who is recorded as being in King William County, Virginia, in 1714.He had five children:Charles, Nicholas, David, William, and Elkanah.
I am descended from Charles, and have a lot of information about that line, but unfortunately, I have nothing relating to the descendants of the other four, including Elkanah.
Some of my information suggests that the Crenshaws went from Leeds, England, to South Wales and from there to the U.S.Other research suggests that the family came from Scotland. All of it seems pretty speculative to me and I don't have anything that would constitute "proof."
One family story says there was an iron works at Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales that was extablished by Richard Crawshay, who came from Normanton, near Leeds. He had a relative (a son maybe) named William Thompson Crawshay of Cyfarthfa Castle, County Glamorgan, Wales. The writer of this family history thinks perhaps David Crenshaw was William Crawshay's son.In all honesty, while it might be true, it sounds like wishful thinking to me (a castle, yet!).
My grandfather's extensive research says that the first member of the family in this country was Joseph Croshaw or Crashaw (it's spelled both ways) in Gloucester County, Virginia, in 1638.He was a vestryman at Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg. All records that would have shown the relationship were supposed to have been destroyed in a fire in Richmond during the Civil War.
Why my grandfather thinks Joseph Croshaw is an ancestor is unclear, and I don't really have any idea where he got this information, except that at some point David Crenshaw had a grant of land in King William County which he never accepted, and that land passed to a Joseph Crenshaw. My grandfather thought Joseph Crenshaw was a descendant of Joseph Croshaw--why, I don't know.
I wish I could be more help in this area.I look forward to seeing if you get more responses and get more information.
