More to the point regarding questions in your last post -- the will of Thomas Crayton.
The exerpt you sited made several errors in transcription.
Item 1st purports that Thomas Crayton had THREE children when the actual will says "two children" and names William L. and Eliza.
Item 7 does not say"until my SON Samuel Crayton's time is up with Sherman & Company but rather my BROTHER".
It is very confusing -- both Major Thomas Crayton (who's will this is) and Samuel Crayton were married to women with first name "Mary".Add to that the fact that Samuel Crayton's mother's name was "Mary".Then to the fact that I believe the evidence points to Thomas Crayton being the name of the father of Samuel Crayton since he disappears from the census records the year that mother Mary Crayton begins to appear on the records as a widow.
Based on Thomas Crayton's will which was dated 1815 and proved at his death in 1824, he owned land in Pendleton District as well as his house & lot in Greenville where he owned & ran a store. He owned several tracts of land in Pendleton District -- not Abbeville County where mother Mary Crayton lived -- on Hencoop Creek and also on the waters of Little River. In 1815 when the will was written, he intended for his wife to live there and raise his children who were about the same age as my Samuel Crayton.Perhaps this Thomas Crayton and my Samuel were cousins?Or step brothers?I wish I knew. There is an old well near Belton in the lower part of Anderson County (used to be Pendleton District)with an historical marker designating it as the Craytonville well. There was once in the early days of the County a community there which has long since disappeared.Craytonville turns up on some old 19th century maps.Since county records are incomplete when it comes to deeds due to fires, etc. the only connection I've been able to find at all is possibly to this Thomas Crayton since Hencoop Creek runs nearby.I don't know where Thomas Crayton is buried. Perhaps he was buried on his land since he hasn't turned up in any of the county cemetery surveys.Someone may have plowed over the spot by now. I'm sorry to say I've found other family plots ignored with the current owners grazing cattle over the field stones. Samuel Crayton is buried in Greenville in the old cemetery off Hwy 29 near the center of town. Can't recall the name right now.
Thomas Crayton who left the will in Greenville County was referred to in the Augusta Chronicle 4/17/1824 as "Major" Thomas Crayton in the death notice. His death also appears in the Greenville News.He ran a store in Augusta, GA prior to setting up a store in Greenville.Just prior to his death he had bought property in Henry County, GA meaning to move there with his family to begin running a business but his health prevented that. The death notice says he suffered a long confinement from dropsy. He was 50 when he died. The death notice also says that he left a wife and 2 children. His son William L. Crayton moved there with his mother to run the business afterward before finally moving to AL where he served as a Justice of the Peace.
(William L. Crayton married Miss Martha S. Clements 8/10/1826 at McDonough, Henry County, GA.He shows up in 1841 on several land patents in AL.This was land ceded by Creek Indians during the time the Indians were being moved out to Oklahoma and if I'm reading the script correctly it was in Tallapoosa Land District.)
I think there is family connection between Major Thomas Crayton and Samuel Crayton but I just can't find the link!No other Samuel Crayton turns up in the area records who could be the "brother Samuel Crayton".
My Samuel Crayton ran a store. His sons, Baylis Franklin and Thomas also were involved in mercantile business.Perhaps there is another Samuel Crayton -- but I can't find a written record of him.
I hope this helps a little.
