Craytons in SC
My interest is in Samuel Crayton (ca. 1793 - 29 Mar 1829, Greenville SC) who married Mary Thompson Mauldin (ca. 1804 - 17 Apr 1831, Greenville, SC).He lived in the Pickens County/Greenville County area during the 1820s.He was a merchant who owned property in Greenville County and also at least one farm in Pickens County. He and his wife died young and left 3 children, Baylis Franklin Crayton, b. 11 July 1820; Mary Jane Crayton, b. ca. 1825 d. ?;Thomas Samuel Crayton, often just listed as Thomas, b. 1826 d. 1889.
Baylis Franklin Crayton married Martha Evaline Benson born 1826, daughter of Captain John B. Benson and Catherine "Kittie" Sloan, daughter of David & Susannah Majors Sloan.

Mary Jane Crayton is shown living with her cousin's family (Samuel Mauldin) in Greenville on 1850 census.Nothing about her after that!Thomas Samuel Crayton was married 3 times, his first two wives dying after childbirth.Only one son survived from his 2nd marriage to Hattie Whitlock, Thomas Samuel Crayton, Jr.Their were 4 children from his 3rd marriage.Wife, Nancy Sloan, daughter of Thomas Majors Sloan & wife Nancy Easley Blassingame.Children:Nan, Julian, Lizeve & Maxwell Sloan Crayton.

Would also like to know his relationship to Major Thomas Crayton who was a merchant in Augusta, GA then in Greenville, SC about the same time as Samuel Crayton, then bought a business in McDonough, GA.He died before being able to make the move there. His will refers to his brother Samuel who was to have first choice of his inventory as soon as "his time is up with Sherman & Co.".

Samuel's Mother Mary Crayton is too young apparently to have been mother of Major Thomas Crayton. They appear more as comtemporaries.Thought she might be stepmother but her will refers to the children of her son, Thomas.Don't think they would have 2 Thomas's in the family. And unfortunately she does not name Thomas' children specifically. She does name the children of her son, Samuel.

Clements in McDonough, GA in 1826.They later moved to Chambers, AL.Eliza Crayton Spencer was born 1804 and died 1829 in Henry County, GA.More Replies:
