The following obituary appeared in the Bath County World, Fri., 01 Jun 1906 (Local Vital Records from Newspapers of Bath County, KY, 1884 to 1910, by Eric C. Nagle (Dayton, OH:Ford and Nagle, Historians and Genealogists, 1995).
John Witcher Sharp was born in Sharpsburg, KY, Apr 15, 1823 and died May 21, 1906, aged 83 years, one month and six days.Married to Mary craycraft on Nov. 25, 1847, she dying Apr. 29, 1888.Seven children, six girls and one boy, of whom three survive: Mrs. Nancy A. Smyser, Mrs. Dora B. Alley, and Mrs. Ella O. Terrell.Four children dead: Mary and Willie dying as infants; Mrs. Elizabeth W. Powers and Mrs. Emily R. Grinstead passing later in life, both with families.twenty grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.Member of Missionary Baptist Church since 1850.Moved to Tipton Co., Ind. in 1848 settling on government land in 1853.He was a son of Dr. richard and Emily (Witcher) Sharp and was born and reared in Sharpsburg.One brother, Dr. William Sharp, who died in May 1876.Two sisters, Emily and Nannie; the latter married a Mr. Cook.Dr. Richard Sharp was the son of Moses Sharp, founder of Sharpsburg in whose honor the town's name was changed to from Bloomfield.Dr. Richard Sharp was born Apr. 6, 1792 and died Aug 25, 1825.Elected to the General Assembly but died suddenly at the close of the election, said to have been poisoned by political rivals.
