Dear James:
Here is what we Telfords have at least some documentation for:
Joseph Telford was born 3Feb, 1791 in Chester Co. SC.He married Martha "Patsy" Craven in 1819 (also Chester Co, SC).We have not found birth records for Martha. We believe she was born in 1798 in Chester Co.
In 1831 Josesph and Martha move to Racoon, IL, bought land and had children. They are both buried in the Old Covenanter Cemetery in Marion Co., IL. Documentation for their lives in IL is from the Marion Co. Historical Society, cemetary records and photographs of their tombstones.
Joseph's father was Samuel Telford who we believe was born in 1770 in Chester Co.Samuel died in Chester Co. and his will was probated in that county court in Nov. 1834.We have not found his gravesite, yet.
Samuel married Margaret McCreary(b.1768?) in 1790 in Chester Co., SC.Again, no firm documents!Margaret was descended from the Gastons and McCreary's of South Carolina. My Sister and I are working with the McCreary's to further document this.
We are also hoping to pin down documents to prove Samuel's parents - Joseph Telford and Rachel Ellison - both of who may have been born in Ireland; both of whom are supposed to be buried in SC.
I live just south of Charlotte, NC - less than 30 miles from any of the potential burial sites.I do have an active professional life, however, so my research time is limited.
My sister is continuing the research for Telfords, Nelms, Phillips and some others in IL.
I welcome your direct e-mail contact if you need to discuss any of this further.
