William, Earl of CRAVEN & Elizabeth STUART
My great-grandmother was Elizabeth G. CRAVEN (11/03/1866-11/25/1955) from Philadelphia, daughter of David Roberts CRAVEN & Elizabeth HANNABERY or Elizabeth GROVE.According to our CRAVEN family Bible, we trace the tree back to Thomas CRAVEN (1714-1799) in Bucks Co.From other researcher I find that Thomas was a son of Jacobus CRAVEN (1681-1761) & Annetje INGART, and Jacobus was a son of Thomas CRAVEN (1654-1718) & Emmetje ISBRANDT.
I guess that is where the real work begins.I know there is a line of research that says Thomas (1654-1718) was an illigitimate son of William, Earl of CRAVEN & Elizabeth STUART, Queen of Bohemia and daughter of James STUART, King James I of Great Britain, son of Mary, Queen of Scots.I guess most of us would like to think we are connected to royalty somewhere in our tree, and it would definitely be fascinating if it is true.
Elizabeth STUART died in 1662, so Thomas CRAVEN would have still been a child. In what little I have read, there is nothing to suggest that William raised a son on his own.I know the "earldom" (if that is the proper word) expired upon William's death, and his baronry passed to a cousin.I do not know enough to know why.I guess one answer could be that William's only son was illigitimate, and none of the titles would pass to an illigitimate son.Another answer would be that William had no children, ligitimate or illigitimate. That would mean William CRAVEN & Elizabeth STUART were not the parents of Thomas CRAVEN, and thus, no royal connection.
Does anyone have any answers or thoughts about this?I sure would appreciate your input.
Steve
