In response to your query about the founding of Crates, Pa. It is a little village located in southeastern Limestone Twp., Clarion Co.
It was settled by pioneer Catholic families from Westmoreland Co. It was first referred to as Red Bank in the early 1800's and given the name Arondale for a short period of time.
One of the first Catholic settlers was Philip Grett/Crate and his son, Charles Crate.
When the first post office was established, the name "Arondale" was too long for the rubber stamps, and the name "Crates" was chosen for convenience.
