Hi folks,
I've done some work on a Cranstoun family that had land in Eddleston parish (Courhope) from c. 1600 to 1770, but their main seat was at Ladyside, then Dewar, just over the hills from Eddleston, both in Heriot parish.
They mostly had their kids baptised in Heriot or Edinburgh, but there are a few very patchy Cranston bapts in Eddleston from 1650s who may be descendants of earlier Ladyside ancestors. I have found none baptised at Courhope, but a few close by, in farms that might even have been part of Courhope estate (of which Cranstouns had 1/4; they got it by marriage with a Greig of Courhope heiress c. 1600, which family had held it from 1480, with Royal Charter 1481).
One of these may in turn be ancestor of early 18th cent. Eddleston Cranstons, but no proof either way.
William Cranstoun who had John b. 1722 was at Kingside, near the border with Penicuik parish. We can be pretty sure that this is the same John who had Robert b. 1753, as he was also tenant in Kingside. I presume this Robert was the one who had Robert 1786, Stephen 1792.........
I'd guess this William (1st recorded kid b. 1714) was unrecorded son of William (prob. b. 1657 near Courhope, son of Robert), who had Agnes 1686/7 near Courhope, but no other kids recorded. The dates, area & forenames all fit, but again no proof.
I have a text chart of Cranstoun of Dewar, Greigs etc. which I can email you, if of any interest. The Ladyside Cranstons must have had some known(then)relationship to the Cranstouns of that Ilk mid 16th cent. onwards, since the Chief and several cousins witnessed some family charters.
I live near Penicuik & ken the area well; there is excellent Local Studies Library for Midlothian in Loanhead with free OPR & census access.
They have lotsa info on papermakers; might have some employment-related ledgers etc. Midlothian Archives similar, but indices not online & stuff has to be ordered in advance for delivery to Loanhead.
Hope this helps; I'd love to see any charts you have of Cranston descendants.
Rob
