There is a concern amongst many researchers as to who Reuben (II) of Port Perry's Parents were:

Please see notes below....if someone can add to this it would be wonderful.

I have been researching the Rev. Reuben vs the Reuben Crandell of Port Perry and will share what I have with you. I have the following Reubens....and I know some of them are duplicates. If anyone comes across an actual baptisimal record or birth certificate or marriage certificate of Reuben (II) The information from it would be very useful.

B – 1797 July 4 – Reuben Crandell – B. Saratoga Cty) mrd C.More. (son of George Crandell)
B 1799 Oct 2- Reuben Crandall born, Saratoga,– mrd, Catherine Moore( son of Reuben ??)
B 1817 - Reuben Crandell – mrd. Rachel Nowlin ( son of Thomas Crandall)
B 1815 Sept 16 – Reuben Crandell (1901 Ont Census) Colborne Village.
B. 1763 – Reuben Crandall (son of George Crandell) mrd. Rachel ????
B. 1761 Mar 2 – Reuben Crandell – B. NE, NY, Dutchess Co.(son of Laban Crandell)
B. 1767 Mar 2 – Rev. Reuben Crandell – New York, Dutchess Co.(son of ???)
B 1763 Mar 22 – Reuben Crandell – mrd Rachel ?? (son of George)
B 1807 Oct. –Reuben Crandell – (son of John Crandall/Bethany Sisson)
B. 1819 – Reuben Dubbridge Crandell, Fingal Elgin, Ontario.
B 1820 Dec 6, Reuben C, Crandell – London, Ontario (son of Rev. Reuben Crandell)
B 1832 Aug – Reuben Crandell – born Reach Twp. Port Perry, Ont(son of Reuben)
B 1816, Sept 16 – Reuben A. Crandell – mrd. Eliza Montgomery Chapin ( son of Palmer)
B 1824 Aug 11 – Reuben James Crandell –St. George, Ont. Mrd. Jane Burgess(son of Laban Crandell)
B 1849 Sept 1 – Reuben W.Crandell – B. Borelia, Ontario(son of Benjamin Crandell)
B 1832, July 27 – Reuben Crandell –mrd 1857 Thurza Rattenbury( son of Reuben 1797)

I might add that I have found no documentation where Rev. Reuben Crandell was actually Laban Crandell’s son. The fact that he is his son has been speculation only.

I might also add the following insert from the Journal of the Baptist Christian Messenger, Volume 1 dated April 23, 1857…Elder Reuben Crandall, born Saratoga Co. N.Y. 1768: licensed preacher at age of 19, came to Canada in 1775 (?) to Cramahe Twsp and was pastor there til 1810; came then to Ancaster to Jersey Settlement and in 1821 to Malahide; went to South Dumfries for 7 years and then back to the Jersey Settlement. Died in Sept 1853. Elder Reuben Crandall was married at Coldwater, Michigan on Monday 13 day of April by Rev. Calvin Sawdey, George William Verrall, printer of Chatham, C.W. to Helen Potter of Ovid, Branch Co., Michigan.

I might also add the in the Canadian Baptist Arch., McMaster Divinity College ( Hamilton, Ont.) Aylmer Baptist Church ( Aylmer, Ont.) church minute-book, June 1848 – Jan 1888; Biog. File, Reuben Crandall, “A general history of the Baptist denomination in America and other parts of the world….etc…. NOTE PLEASE!!!!In this history of the REV. REUBEN CRANDELL there is no mention of him ever being in Port Perry, Scugog Region!!!!!

I have a copy of a hand written letter …sent to me by a direct decendant of Julia Smith-Beemer wife of Rev. Reuben Crandell. It gives an account of Rev. Crandall’s ( note the spelling in all of the documents I have) travels as he ministered and none of them come close or include a mention of the Port Perry, Scugog Region!!!!!

I have a copy of the Extracts taken from the Diary of James Gordon Clayton..Grandson of Julia Bemer, 2nd wife of Reuben Crandell. She was the widow of Joseph Bemer…Note how he spells the Bemer name. He has the children of Reuben Crandall and Julia Bemer being:
Pheobe Crandell born May 6, died 1837,
Sarah Crandell born Aug 6, 1817
Reuben Crandell born Dec 6, 1820 died Dec 1, 1903.

Julia Smith …wife of Joseph Bemer ws born in Delaware County, New York. Her maiden name was Benjamin, Her mother was born in Rhode Island and her father was born in Long Island. Joseph Bemer born in March 19, 1770 died in 1813…..There is more, but most significant is the fact that this was put together and signed J.G. Clayton, October 7, 1906.

I also have a photocopy of the Obit for Julia Bemer Clayton…Daughter of Julia Bemer-Crandell. Julia was 4 years old when her mother married Rev. Reuben Crandall. In her obit it mentions where she had attended school in Medina NY USA to become a teacher. I might note that there is no mention what so ever in her Obit, which is a lengthy one that they had ever resided anywhere near Port Perry, Lindsey or Scugog Lake.

Julia brought 6 Bemer children into the home when she married Rev. Reuben Crandall. As well as having 3 children with Rev. Reuben and bringing into the family the 7 children that Rev Reuben had with his first wife Lydia Mace….Making a total of 16 children in the household.

I have documents sent to me through the kindness of a Crandell researcher in Michigan who is a decendant of Rev. Crandell. They include the Obituary of Elder Reuben Crandell in the 1853 Toronto Christian Observer… The Memoirs of ElderReuben Crandell from the Christian Messenger April 23, 1857, .no mention of him ever being in Port Perry, Reach Twp.

There is another document sent to me written by S. Read of Brantford, Ontario April 10, 1857. It is a 3 page document which states that Rev. Reuben Crandall was baptized at the Baptist Church in Duchess County in NY states the pastor being Rev. J. Tanner.

He married Lydia Mace at 19 years of age. With whom he had 4 children. The first born died. This is a lovely document which portrays his spirit and personality. This document too only mentions him travelling and preaching through the Great Lakes area and nary a mention of him travelling to the interior of the province to Scugog Lake, Port Perry or Lindsey area.

I have many other documents ….my conclusion from all of this information is that the Reuben Crandell settler of Port Perry, Reach Twp, Scugog Lake in Ontario, Canada.….My GGGGrandfather was not the Rev. Reuben Crandell. It is possible that Rev Reuben's son Reuben could be the Reuben of Port Perry but I have to date no proof of this. If anyone can come up with documentation as to who the parentage of Reuben Crandell of Port Perry is I would dearly love to hear from you. Without this documentation none of us who decend from this Reuben will be able to complete our Genealogy back to John Cortland Crandall.

I have a file from a Crandell from Manitoba and her file goes George Crandell married to Tracy Tanner, children James and Reuben born 1797 married to Catherine More (Moore). I do not know that this information is accurate...if anyone has any more information on this family it might help......Chris.
