I read with interest your message of 3 March, 2000. While traveling in the west in the late 1950s I noted Mt. Crandell on the map just north of Glacier National Park. In trying to find out who the mountain was named after Iwrote to the Department of Geology at the University of Alberta. They kindly forwarded my inquiry to the Provincial Library in Edmonton. I finally found the reply dated 9 Sept. 1959 from E. J. Holmgren, Provincial Librarian, and have copied the pertinent information below:
"I have checked the origin of the name Mt. Crandell and Crandell Lake and I find that they were named for a Mr. E. H. Crandell of Calgary who worked oil wells in the area early in the century. Unfortunately, I been unable to find reference to Mr. Crandell, who he was or what his subsequent ventures were as we have no material on him."
It's not much and, as usual, just adds more of a mystery to be solved. Hard to tell if this was the Crandell whose name became attached to the town, as well.
