Sister Damien Marie Crandall, OSF, of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany died Saturday (June 30, 2007) at Olean General Hospital

Born Frieda Mae Crandall on Oct. 1, 1921, in Utica, she was a daughter of George D. and Nora Costello Crandall, formerly of Utica.

She was received into the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse on Aug, 15, 1946, and professed her final religious vows on Aug 16, 1954..

Sister Damien Marie lived the mission of the gospel as a Franciscan Sister of Allegany. Her first ministry as a teacher included St. Peter's School in Pleaseantville N.. St. Paul's School in Highland Park, N.J., and Blessed Sacrament School in Utica. In 1951, her ministry changed to the area of business, and she served in secretarial positions at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden, N.J., St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL, and St. Clare's Hospital in New York City.

In 1966, Sister received a certificate in hospital management from Rutgers University in New Jersey. In 1973, she was named administrative secretary to the general minister of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany and in 1984 moved to Blessed Sacrament convent in Utica to serve as administrative assistant to the regional minister. Upon return to St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in 1992, Sister Damien Marie used her administrative secretarial skills as a volunteer in the leadership offices of the congreagation and retired in 2001. In her retirement, she continued to serve others by her life of presence and prayer.

In addition to her Franciscan Sisters, she is survived by two sister, Edna Barlow and Norma Kirchner, as well as nieces, grandnieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents.

Interment will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetary, Allegany, NY
