My grandmother Katharine was born May 18, 1908 and was taken to THE HOME FOR THE FRIENDLESS in Scranton, Pa where she was later adopted. She was told that her parents were not married. Katharine was not told she was adopted until 1930 when she got married. Katharine's adopted mother (Laura Radspinner Davenport) gave her the copy of her adoption papers. A few weeks ago I decided to email the place formerly known as Home For The Friendless to see if they could give me any information. Just today I got back a reply from them after they did some looking into their records. This is what I received: Renae, I have done some research in regards to your grandmother's affiliation with Friendship House in the early 1900's. I found a record that contained one piece of paper and an index card. Here is the information that was there: Your grandmother: Katherine Crandall Rhodes (also spelled Catharine on the index card) DOB May 18, 1908 Brought to the House of Detention on February 17, 1909 by Mrs.Rhodes when Mr. Rhodes, the foster father deserted his wife and child (your grandmother). On April 13 or 14, 1909, Katherine was taken to the Home for Friendless Children in Scranton (Friendship House) She was then placed with a woman in Binghamton, NY who brought her back to the Home for Friendless Children on June 14, 1910. She was then discharged to Mrs. Laura Davenport on May 23, 1911. Your grandmother's birth mother was Gwendolin Harris, and birth father was Elias Crandall. I hope that this information will assist you in putting together you family history. Best Wishes Can anyone give me more info on any of this? Thank you! Notify Administrator about this message?
