Given the continued existence locally of the name Maiden, in any variation, it seems more likely than I originally had thought that this might be her name as opposed to just a fill-in-the-blank description generated by eager historians/genealogists. Although I've seen the name primarily in others' family trees in Ancestry.com, all the records I have simply omit any surname.
As far as John's alleged marriage to a Lydia, the logic that seems most telling to me is the fact that records show the marriage to Hester White in 1624 and the subsequent birth of their first child, Elizabeth, in 1625. Seems that if there had been a previous wife, there would have been previous children. I don't know where Bell and Pope got their information, but it seems predicated on presumption rather than concrete facts. But who ever really knows for sure? We just have to go by what seems right, I guess.
