Cram/von Cramm controversy

I have a question about Jane, the wife of Thomas Cram (1563), the apparent father of John Cram (1596) the immigrant, and perhaps Barry Cram is tuning in and can enlighten me, as it was partially through his information that I was convinced of what seems to be the truth of John's parentage (Cram, not von Cramm). My question is: Was "Maiden" proven to be Jane's surname or was it perhaps just a descriptor? Also, is there any definitive proof as to whether John had one or two wives (Hester and Lydia)? I've seen it both ways (Bell vs. Sanborn). I know that "definitive" proof in these things is hard to come by. John Cram was my great x8 grandfather.
